Basic Bread

When we make something a lot, sometimes we tend to try to make them ever fancier and more interesting. But in reading my old falling apart cookbook, the one I got at McCrory's around 1975 for $1, I found a recipe for this very basic bread. Tweak the size just a bit to fit the bread maker, and hooray! A simple bread that everyone enjoyed.

BASIC BREAD

1-1/2 cups warm milk
3 tsp or 6 tsp yeast
4 cups flour
2-1/2 tbsp sugar
1-1/2 tsp salt
2 tbsp butter

In your mixing bowl or bread machine bucket, dissolve the yeast in the milk (use 3 tsp if you're not in a hurry, and 6 tsp if you're like me and always behind schedule). Add the remaining ingredients and process according to my directions over to the side. Allow the bread to bake in the machine if you're so inclined (let's face it, that is the easiest way), or remove it after the first kneading, split in 2 pieces, and fit into two greased 8x4 loaf pans. Let rise until doubled, and bake at 350F (375 for metal pans) about 24 to 26 minutes, until the desired golden color is achieved.

Wait a few minutes before slicing, if you can, because this is so soft and fluffy.

And if you happen to have a half loaf left over, it makes great toast the next day - with or without peanut butter!

I've gone back to making bread for the last couple months. I have to use a bread machine, but even so it smells and tastes wonderful, so much better than store bought.

N has brought me a bread maker but there is no space in this house in the UK to use it. I am going to enjoy 'playing' when I get to France. We can enjoy French bread as it should be made at the weekends from the boulangerie, then I can make during the week ;)Diane

Mmmm... it looks delicious! My New Years resolution is to get "back to basics" again, and return to cooking simple, tried and true meals - so this bread would be a perfect choice!

And my toast? WITH peanut butter, thank you!

Oh, I love bread. Especially right out of the oven. Some butter or honey-it is pure bliss!

I should be ashamed to admit I'm literally drooling, but I'm not. Le sigh... whipped honey butter. Yeah...

I love "milk bread" ... and yours looks yummy!

Hope your holidays were great and that you had lots of good family time. I'm slowly catching back up to the blogs I like to read, yours being one of them. :-) Thanks for keeping up with me on mine.

All I need is butter. Ok, I'll do it this weekend.

Such a fluffy, light looking loaf - my choice with it toasted would be to spread on some mashed and seasoned avocado. Mmmmmmm

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Harriet, the bread smells so gooooood! You are such a wonderful domestic engineer! You are so right, I glad God doesn't expect perfection. Reaching for it is a process, just like my Christian walk. I can't just leave Him out of my sewing life - it wouldn't be right!
