7 Things About Thor

Inspired by Duckie's recent 7 things about her chihuahas, I decided that it was time to tell everyone all about Thor. Or at least more about Thor.

1. Thor was born May 1, 2001, which makes him 7-1/2 years old. He's the longest lived Mastiff we've had, and he's our third.
Wasn't he an adorable baby?

2. Thor's front shoulders are the height of my breakfast room table, which is 31", and he weighs about 265. It is rather hard to get a really good weight on a critter that size without a cattle scale, which we don't happen to have.

3. Thor dares not put his head on the table, because I once thwacked his nose with a paper for doing just that. Yes, one thwack is all it took to teach him that dog heads on eating tables are no-nos.

4. We got Thor when he was 7 weeks old. We paid $300 extra for the pick of the litter. He was one of the 2 biggest, his brother being the same weight within 3 ounces (and, at 22 pounds, what does 3 ounces count for?). We chose Thor because in all the pictures the guy sent, Male #4 had his tail up, and when we went to get him, he had his tail up and he was trotting around vigorously. We felt that was a sign of curiosity and intelligence, so he was ours! Of course, that soon meant that we were his.

5. Whenever any of his people come home, Thor does a really great happy dance. It doesn't matter if they've been gone an hour or a year, the greeting is outstanding!

6. Thor will only eat Bites and Bones, and then only reluctantly. If forced to eat plain dog food, he will do so, but there really ought to be people food in there; after all, Thor's a people, too. Even green beans trump Bites and Bones, but peanut butter sandwiches may
be the best of all!

7. Thor always barks at men walking past on the street, but not usually at ladies, and never at children. We have a fence to keep the kids (including the furry one) in, and those who don't know where to enter are kept out.

Thor loves that all of you come to visit, and encourages you to post 7 things about your favorite 4 footed family member! He reminds you that dogs and cats are people, too!

Edited at 11:15 to add that one of our neighbor's dogs was killed by a car last night. Their children are distraught. I'll be sending some apple cinnamon bread for comfort. This phone call just made me go wake Thor and give him a hug. Now he thinks school's over and it's playtime.

This is right! Dogs and cats are people too. What a great baby picture. I wish mine would learn that easily that tables and counters aren't for slimy faces, ugh! I know, should we ever meet I can't feed you :-) g

Hey Marjie ... I couldn't get the comments section to work here .. so I'm posting as Anonymous until I figure it out!

Wowwee! Check out the size of his paws when he was a puppy! We knew a family YEARS ago that had this same breed of dog, and their dog had bonded with the cat. They were always together, and the dog used to grab onto the cat's head/neck and carry it around as if the dog were the momma cat. In return, the cat used to lick the dog's head and ears as if the dog were it's kitten. Talk about a lion and lamb moment! As sweet as they were, Thor takes the cake as the lovable giant. Great post!

Marie everytime I see Thor's picture or read a post about him, I become more and more fond of him. He's a real cutie. Our dog is a Hybrid, part German Shepherd and part Blue Tick Hound. She weighs about 70 lbs and is a sweetie. The girls want to dress her like a ladybug for Halloween. Don't worry, I won't let them.

Oh!! You're kind to comfort your neighbors. My heart goes out to them...

My husband may NOT find your blog. Ever. He wants a house pony (as I call all giant breeds) rather badly, and I think Thor would end his resolve to wait...

Ok now that's a nice BIG Dog. How many times has this been said to you?
Sorry to hear about your neighbors dog. Our cat was hit by a car and when we adopted out one of our little fur babies (one of the 3 sisters to a cousin) she was also hit by a car. I have a pet cemetery in may yard with all my babies..even a bird and a degu. Can you tell I LOVE ALL Creatures???
Thanks for visiting and I see that you LOVE to BAKE...I hate cooking but no one is starving.

I love the fat puppy belly!! It reminds me of Charlotte when she was a baby. They are definitely members of the family and believe it's their entitlement too don't they!? Thor is a beautiful/handsome guy.

Oh no! Was it one of the little doggies that was "singing" with Thor recently? Gee, that's so sad. I'm sure your neighbors will appreciate your kind gesture.

I love hearing about Thor. Sorry about your neighbor's dog though - that's sad. Good thing you hugged him - bad thing that he thinks it's still play time - lol.

Hi Marjie, I'm so glad that you commented on my blog so that I could come and see your Thor. Mary Jane is an English Mastiff, but she's not nearly as big as yours. She's a "measly" 150 or so. Wow I can't imagine another 100 lbs. on that!

Your Thor looks like such a great guy though. And he's your 3rd mastiff and the oldest at 7? I'd love to hear more about your others. We don't know Mary Jane's exact birthday, but she's probably about 3 now. I hope she's with us for many, many more years!
