The Week of Rotten Milk

Yes, it does sound disgusting, doesn't it? Since he was about 5 and learned to read, Patrick has been announcing that everything is "rotten" 2 or 3 days before its expiration date. It drives me up a wall. So, on the 7th (last Tuesday), he announced that 3 cartons of milk were rotten and he was throwing them out, because the little boys are too afraid of me to do so. I ordered him to cease and desist immediately, and took the milk to the regular refrigerator (as opposde to the bar sized "milk locker" under the pass through on which I place dinner every night). The next day, I made Candy Cane Ice Cream with this "rotten" milk. It's gone. Somehow, no one noticed that the ice cream was rotten. Maybe it was because no one can resist pretty pink food?
By Saturday, the milk was going sour. Perfect! I left it on the counter for a little while, and made a Cinnabun Coffee Cake with sour milk instead of fresh.
It was wonderful - better than the original. My little guy spent the whole weekend grazing at it. And for that little weasel to keep coming back for something is a virtually unknown phenomenom!

One thing they all really enjoyed was my newest creation, Sour Milk Waffles. Of course, I didn't tell them these were made with the "rotten" milk, or no one would have tried them.

SOUR MILK WAFFLES

3 cups flour
1-1/2 tsp salt
5 tsp baking powder
2 tbsp sugar
3 eggs
2-1/4 cups sour milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil

Beat all ingredients together, and bake in a waffle iron. This batter can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days. (Sorry, but I couldn't get a picture before the little guys just dug into their waffles.)

I'm thinking bread and cake are next on the horizon for my "rotten" milk. What a week!

Happy Monday Marjie!

Oh that's too funny. If my kids ever knew how many gallons of "rotten milk" went into their "favorite" goodies, I may just have been brought up on child abuse!!!

I do believe it was one of the reason I started making my own yogurt!!!

Perhaps, there's a "Rotten Milk" cookbook on the horizon!!!

Thanks for sharing...

Um... it sounds wonderful, but I must agree... I am rather picky about the freshness of milk I am going to DRINK. The Knight and your son would get along fabulously.

Well, at least I know your guy won't be coming to visit me then.
I always have 'rotten' milk in the fridge, and I've never thrown any of it out yet!
In fact, I think that Cinnabun Coffee Cake might just be made today, because I have one carton that's more than ready to be used!

The ice cream looks delicious. Rob's favorite dessert is sour milk chocolate cake. Sometimes I think he lets the milk get 'rotten' just so I'll make it.

Well, as a raw milk drinker myself, I know when milk is going "rotten" it's really just on to its next life form. Raw sour milk is SOOOOOO good for SOOOOO many things. And if I were you, I'd tell 'em ALL! Right after they ate everything. lol

HA! I know how you feel - my son refuses to empty any bottle ( milk, juice, water etc.) when there is only a little bit left...'cause then "it is not good anymore..." hmf.. so I often find severalf half filled/empty bottles in the fridge... then I pour them together, and dada!, he starts drinking again...:o)

the ice and cake looks great:o)

Now that's the way to take lemons (rotten milk) and make lemonade (ice cream)!

frankly, i'm tempted to let my newly-purchased gallon of milk sit on the counter and turn sour because ALL of these sound amazing. guess which one i like the best. hint: cinnamon is involved. :)

I have about a quart that's "on the edge". Pancakes will take care of that for me:)

What you don't know won't hurt you, right? LOL...I admire that you let nothing go to waste!

I'd like to be grazing around the coffee cake myself!

Hubby is just the same, he doesn't like to see the milk date come due ! I, on the other hand, see that date as a suggestion - from a house where NOTHING was wasted :-)

BTW - I managed to find red & white candy canes this year and made the candy cane ice cream for my big dinner last Saturday - YUMMY !!!!
