Garden Tuesday: Chives

Well, one thing I've learned is that 2 square feet of chives gives you bucket loads of the suckers. And I do mean bucket loads. This is what Ryan cut for me on Saturday (our second clear cutting this year, so far):
Notice my canister behind the chives, with a pictu
re of chives on it. Weird, right?

I chopped them all, and dried some in the oven at a low temperature. They come out kind of ugly, but you can refill that fancy, expensive little jar that you bought at the superma
rket. Then you have dried chives if you really want them.
Or, you can freeze them. I tried some on a cookie sheet, and some just shoveled into the plastic freezer bag. The ones on the sheet froze faster, but
the ones frozen in the bag kept more chive fragrance.

See? They look and smell like fresh chives. Oh, wait, you don't have the smell-o-rama feature installed in Blogger yet. Neither do I. My error.
Just a word of caution: when you chop that many chives, the onion smell does eventually overcome you, and you'll end up crying. Just a little bit. Then those of us with white eyelashes end up with black streaked faces, and wonder what happened!

Now is the time to encourage at least one of your lovely children to try scuba diving and snorkelling

- then they can gift their Mom with the eye/nose/mouth breathing bit of the gear, or at least some protective glasses. Great for dealing with chopped onions and other members of that vege family - this method works for Billy Connelly.

Am in full sympathy coz I sliced then separated onion half slices to become crispy onions (a la Paula's MOM Chicken recipe) but had to wash my hands and wipe my eyes.

Glorious Chives - do enjoy the bumper harvest!!!

As a fellow blond eyelasher who has a deep and meaningful relationship with her mascara, thank you for the warning.

(Chive flowers look beautiful in salad.)

Those white lashes are a real pain, I have been dying mine since I was 16. Still have to wear mascara though! Diane

Can you imagine what would happen if blogger had smell? Everyone would be 400 lbs from looking and smelling everyone elses food!

Aaah, lovely chives!
I suddenly fancied a plate of scrambeled eggs full of chives!

Ahhh... I love the smell of chives - and yours look simply beautiful!
Mine didn't do too good this year, because I'm sure the damn Aussie rats kept eating them (or maybe possums?) and I ended up with probably just enough to fill a measuring cup.

I'm sure I'll have better luck in Texas! (just JOKING, girl! ;)

Still don't understand how you can cope with so many things...
you must have days of 48 hours...
Thanks for the hints - all of them... ;)

I am such an idiot. I freeze practically every herb in my garden, and I've never done chives!!!

Our friendly neighborhood birds have planted lots of chives in our yard. They're the only green we have in the spring before the grass and weeds wake up. When Rob mows, he comes in the hose smelling like chives. Makes me want to go out for a burger with a slice of onion.
