Italian Bread Sticks

Bread Sticks are a very popular item in my house; what's not to love about a bread stick? They're very portable, flavorful and filling. As an added bonus, they're very easy to make, and that is my favorite part of them. So, on New Year's Eve, I made a batch of Italian flavored bread sticks, which I thought you'd all enjoy.

ITALIAN BREAD STICKS

1-1/3 cups warm water
3 tsp or 6 tsp yeast
4 cups flour
1/4 cup powdered milk
4 tsp sugar
1-1/2 tsp salt
2 tbsp butter, cut in small pieces

1 tbsp melted butter
garlic powder
oregano

Pour the water in your bread machine bucket or mixing bowl, and sprinkle the yeast over it. Use 3 tsp yeast (1 packet) if you have time to wait for the dough to rise, or 6 tsp if you're in a hurry (I'm always in a hurry). Add the remaining ingredients in the order given, and mix according to my bread making directions (see icon to the right). After the dough has been mixed, let it rise 15 minutes, punch it down, and divide into 16 to 20 pieces. Roll each into a small rope, and lay on a greased baking sheet. Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter, and mix with garlic powder (start with 1/2 tsp and increase if you like. Brush on top of the bread sticks, then sprinkle oregano over the top. Let the bread sticks rise until doubled in size, then bake at 400F for 18 to 20 minutes, depending upon how dark you want your bread sticks. Serve with marinara sauce for dipping, and stand out of the way of the stampede coming back for more!

Sissy is pretty sure you shared this just for her. The silly goon dances and leaps around the kitchen, waiting for her stale cheese bread to hide her pill. I might have to make a batch, and then top the leftovers with parmesan cheese, melt, refrigerate, and make one sweet girl happy.

I always buy them, OK so I am lazy. Maybe this post is what I needed for a bit of encouragement, I will give them a try. Diane

These bread sticks look so good - I'm sure Ryan and Jeffrey will be asking for repeat bakings as the breadsticks would make a great lunch to take to school and work.

I'm definately going to halve your quantities and make some for myself.

Sending care and huggles, Michelle and Zebby, xxx and very gentle, soft feline snoring tonight

I never got to make the sweet potato pie. Everyone went on a diet this year--I barely got to make anything! I have to make it for myself!
