EGGLESS CHOCOLATE CAKE
3 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 tsp salt
2 tsp baking soda
2/3 cups cocoa powder
2 tsp vinegar
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 cups milk or water
2/3 cup melted butter
Stir together the dry ingredients. Add the melted butter, milk or water, vanilla and vinegar all at once, and beat until smooth. Turn into a 13"x9" pan which has been greased and dusted with cocoa powder, and bake at 350F for 40 to 45 minutes. I used a sour cream frosting (1/2 cup sour cream, 1 pound confectioner's sugar, 1 tsp vanilla extract, a drizzle of cream, beaten until smooth), and it was terrific.
Have a great weekend, everyone!

Looks great and can come in handy when you find yourself eggless and now wanting to go to a store.
Might have to try this... I can't seem to keep eggs in the fridge!
I would have thought everyone had access to eggs back then - or just about and that flour would be harder to come by.
Your cake looks delicious. have dinner plans tonight - hoping to relax and actually sew something this weekend. g
I wish I would have seen this recipe yesterday. I wanted to make something sweet but didn't have eggs or the energy to go to the store. It looks tasty.
Folks were so innovative back then!
I remember my grandmother making a cake like that in the winter when the hens weren't laying. You make do with what you've got.
This is the third chocolate cake I've seen tonight. I think the universe is trying to tell me something.
Will try this, interesting recipe. Diane
I have had this recipe for years. I received it from a good friend's grandmother. My family requests it all the time.
