Garden Tuesday: Apples

Ryan found this tree at the edge of our forest. It's a sweet crab apple!

The fruit is about 1.5" diameter. They are a lot bigger than regular crab apples, as you can see from this one on my back terrace (the same tree whose flowers I showed you in April).

Do you think they're called crab apples because you're crabby if that's all you can find to eat?

We've had a lot of rain here in the past 3 days - about 4". The rain too
k a lot of apples off the apple tree in my courtyard.
Of course, plenty remain. However, don't let this picture fool you. I used a huge amount of zoom to take this picture, because these apples are a good 20 feet off the ground. I think even Jeff will have trouble reaching them!

I only have a few apples but then I have 3 young trees. I look forward to the next few years when I hope they will produce a lot more. Diane

We had the same tree in our yard when I was growing up. Our dog loved them.

Being the baker you are, I'm sure you could turn those little fellers into something delicious.

Hrmph. I'd grump about your rain, but we're just on the wrong side of scattered showers. Uncle lives about ten miles away as the crow flies, and he got 1.75 inches last night, and we didn't get enough from ANY of the showers to even get the deck truly wet.

Matt noticed that our "crab apples" actually turned into a decent small size apple this year... only we didn't discover this until most had already fallen to the ground. Sigh.

Dear Marjie, so wishing I lived closer so I could borrow your kitchen and make crabapple jelly for you. Your kitchen looks to be such a wonderful place to cook in, and with the sheer volume of crabapples available, I'd be sure to get the recipe right in the end!!!

Think of the crabapple syrup made available to your family to devour over ice cream while I experimented (promise I'd clean up after myself - I would so love to come and play in your big kitchen).

Alternatively you could encourage Ryan to get to "cooking" work .... I'm sure there is a food professional/chef within him.
