Garden Tuesday

Well, the tomato plants in the garden are looking a little scrawny. Late blight is attacking them, sadly. The good news is that the local agricultural co-op says blight will be killed off during the winter, as long as I don't plant blighted potatoes. Since I never got to planting potatoes this year, it won't be a problem! Sometimes procrastination pays, after all.

And on the other side of my house, my hydrangea retains some of its pink color. Hydrangea is a strange plant; naturally white, they turn pink or blue depending upon the fertilizer applied. Some of you may remember that during an income tax day 2008 snowstorm, we lost a couple of giant arbor vitae, which we had stood back up a couple of days later by our lawn service, and they put plenty of tree spikes around them. One was near enough this hydrangea to change its color, and the aftereffects linger yet!

See you tomorrow for discussion of packing lunch.

I need to look up what blight is. I think I know, but am not positive. In the course of just a couple days, downy mildew has destroyed my zucchini. I had hoped that we wouldn't get it this year. Grrr.

So, overall, despite the uncooperative weather this summer, how did you like having a garden? I think yours looks terrific. All that gorgeous lettuce that you had plus you had some awesome looking carrots and green onions! No carrots for me, this year ... sniffle. My onions still have not gotten big, but they have been just super as green onions.

Love your hydrangea; that is so cool about the color change. How are your fruit trees doing? What about that plum tree your boys discovered a while back?

It always makes to laugh, to think of your garden beginning to wind down, and here I am, poring over seed catalogs!
We've got a place in Tasmania that specializes in supplying heirloom seeds, so I'm happily thinking of tomatoes and Walla Walla onions this week!
I WILL have a veggie garden this year, come hell or high water!

Oh... and the plum trees are just bursting into bloom here - the first time I've actually witnessed it! I need to get some photos!

Much of our stuff is really grown up, and should be replaced, but gardening and landscaping are not my passions!

I didn't plant much of a garden this year going back and forth and all...The one tomato plant I started from seed is not doing well at all. Neither is the lonely pepper plant. Oh well, it's hard to garden from afar:(

I did plant cockscomb for the first time this year and I'm quite pleased with it. Will plant again! I don't have any hydrangea. Will have to remedy that!!!
