More Produce

This will get boring.  But it's the only way I'll be able to remember my weekly Misfits Markets box.

Red leaf lettuce and tomatoes for salad, along with nectarines, apples, lemons, grapefruit, zucchini, onions, butternut squash, bok choy and fennel.  I confess, I had to ask one of my daughters what the bok choy and fennel were.

I cut open a grapefruit one morning, and offered the second half to Ryan. He took one bite and rejected it.  Mark tried it and liked it very much; he and I shared the second one this morning.
I also have to say that we were supremely disappointed in the tomatoes.  They were standard hothouse type, relatively flavorless tomatoes, unlike the cherry tomato assortment we got in a previous box.  Still, a nice assortment overall, and Ryan commented that this produce box is a good thing, and I should continue ordering it.

Happy Sunday, everyone!

I think it is a good thing, too. It stretches you to try new things. I love to shave fennel very thinly and make a salad with it. You can also roast it with some olive oil and salt and pepper. Just cut into quarters first. If you get tomatoes that are less than stellar, you can make them into a wonderful sauce. Quarter tomatoes, cored bell pepper, onions and garlic, douse with some oil, rosemary, oregano, salt and pepper. Roast for about 45 minutes at 400F on a sheet tray. I just keep a watch on it, because some ovens are hotter than others. When it the veggies are showing some colour, remove from the oven and let cool a bit. Then blitz in a blender or food processor to make a great pasta sauce.

I'm getting some great ideas from the comments. I use fennel in my Russian mushroom dish. I love it but making it is a real project. There's also fennel in one of the dog's probiotics. Guess it's good for the tummy.

I don't think it's boring! I love seeing your produce boxes. It's too bad the tomatoes were flavorless this week. Bok Choy is delicious! I love it sauteed with sesame oil, soy sauce, and garlic. Fennel is really tasty when roasted - I usually slow roast it with a whole chicken, potatoes, carrots, and onion. I love that Ryan thinks you should keep ordering the produce.

Getting a produce box would force me to get creative so we could try different ways of preparation.

I don't think its boring at all. I'm anxious to see what you do with the fennel and bok choy. I see it used a lot on Food Network, but never in a dish that I would make.
