Cookbook Wednesday!

Last week's featured cookbook, Foods From Famous Kitchens, really struck a chord with almost everyone.  So I thought I'd confess that I, too, had collected 487 scraps of paper, index cards and whatnot.  But, as Larry guessed, mine were not loose in a drawer.  They were carefully filed in a little grey box.

But then came this:

Looks like an ordinary cookbook, right?  Look at it on my shelf.

I found this gem at McCrory's for about $3, some 10 to 15 years ago, before they closed.  (Does anyone else miss those cheap variety stores, where they had odd things for absurdly low prices?)  It came with section dividers,

and pages to write recipes on (these pages, by the way, are a thin cardboard, and will never wear out).

I took some of my scraps of paper and recipe cards and simply glued them to pieces of paper which I then punched.

This book also came with sleeves akin to photo album pages, to hold more complex things, like newspaper pages.

Remember when companies used to send out sample recipe cards, in hopes of convincing us to subscribe to their service, whatever it might have been?  Yep, I punched those, too.  I couldn't throw out such nice items!

And I've even punched some of those recipe booklets that come with pans and appliances, like this one for my Pampered Chef springform pan.

All of my girls like Mom's Recipe Box, so I wonder who will try to pilfer it first!

This post is carrying on Louise's tradition of Cookbook Wednesday, which is on hiatus for February.

If anyone else is posting about a cookbook, and would like me to mention yours, just leave me a comment and I'll add a link to you below.  It's not as good as Louise's Linky Tool, but I'll try to carry on her delightful tradition for as long as she needs a break!

Edited to add:

I love the "build your own" cookbooks! I like that yours is mixed media, too.

I have a post today I'd like to link: http://granniepantries.blogspot.com/2015/02/under-pressure.html.

Thank you for carrying on the tradition!

Happy Cookbook Wednesday Marjie!!!

Ingenious! I love your "build your own" cookbook too!!! I do miss those cheap variety stores. I remember when McCroy's was called Britts or was it the other way around, lol...You could always find just the right thing in those stores and many times the obscure.

I love the way you adapted that book to personalize it and make it easy to use.

Maybe we should include recipe clippings on Cookbook Wednesdays, lol...

Thank you so much for sharing, Marjie and a huge thank you for carrying on with Cookbook Wednesday!!!

Awww, that's my dear Dad's oatbread recipe! His name is gordon and my mother is Molly; they've now been married for 55 years and 9 months.

I have folders with recipes in, and loose pieces of paper hanging out as well as as a write in your favourites "red recipe book". Like Molly's, mine also has loose recipes on cards and pieces of paper, however mine still has an intact spine. I confess that these days I just look online.

Happy cooking and eating, Michelle XXX

Yes, that should be Gordon, with a capital G :-)

I love that! My best friend made me a recipe book when I first started dating my husband. I still look through it, although, I have most of the recipes memorized by now.

I bet if you tried to find a similar book now, it would be labeled "Cookbook Scrapbook" and instead of $3, it would be $25. ;) But what a great idea!

My notebook cookbook isn't as cute or versatile as yours, but I took a nice suede covered three ring binder and started putting my cuttings in plastic sleeves. After trying a recipe, if it makes the grade, I type it up neatly with any notes and stick it in the front of the binder. It's also nice for pages from magazines because I can keep the picture along with the recipe.

That put together cookbook is a gem! I don't have any cookbooks to review this week, but I might have one for next week!

Hello Marjie,

We are total lost causes when it comes to cooking and we stay out of the kitchen as much as possible. A friend of ours has a collection of these scrapbooks containing recipes that she has amassed over decades but, we do not have a single one. We do have some cookbooks which lie forlornly on a shelf but they rarely see the light of day. We are only alive because of our housekeeper, Timea, who cooks like a dream.

We have found you via Deana's blog. For, as much as we do not cook, we do love to eat.We have signed up as followers and shall return.

I have to admit that more than half of our bookcase is devoted to cook books and recipe files. The problem is I am usually in a hurry and it is so much quicker to look things up on the iternet unless it is a very special recipe that I have filed in a very special file!! Keep well Diane

Hmm, might have to make my own.

I have a notebook like that from when I got my very first apartment. It has recipies from my mom and my grandmother for all the things they made that I liked. I don't use it that often, especially the recipies from grandma. Somehow they never come out quite the same. I think she added an extra dose of love.
