Garden Tuesday: Resiliance

See end of post for bear notice.

I believe my little town has been relocated to somewhere between Seattle and Fairbanks, with the weather charms of both simultaneously. Sunday, it was sunny here - and 65 degrees, with a 20MPH wind out of the north. The little boys wore their coats outside, and Thor would have none of it. Jeepers, our lawn hasn't even been mowed in nearly 2 weeks, because it's been raining every day except Sunday, and the temperature has never even reached 70.

With that in mind, I ran outside between the raindrops this morning to take a picture of the garden for you. Not close up, just a picture. Sadly, the cold caused one of my 2 carrot square feet to not come up, and 4 of my 8 tomato squares never came up either. I'm restar
ting them indoors. Now, where is that global warming again?
(Ignore the shaggy grass around the beds. Remember, no mowing for 2 weeks because of constant rain.)

Anyway, I thought I'd show you a picture of a tree I love. We have a line of old maples up the middle of our lawn. A year after we bought the place, when we were out of town, lightning hit the one closest to the house and took it down. It really hurts to lose a 3 foot diameter tree; they don't grow in a big hurry. We had someone here working on something while we were gone, so he cut up the tree for us before we returned. The next year, we were thrilled to see sucker s
hoots coming up from the stump. And now, look at it! It's like the biggest maple bush you've ever seen!
The resiliance of nature! And the joys of watching a hundred year old yard.

And if you haven't been there, visit the Blond Duck in her pond. Thor is at the Puppy Ball today.

Edited to add: A neighbor just called, and asked if I'd heard about the mother bear and two cubs who had been hanging around the yard across the street between 7 and 10AM. Thankfully, NO! And even more thankfully, we have a high fence to keep Thor in, which should effectively keep bears out! Duckie's Bear, is, of course, invited in, but his name belies his species.

The greens are greener right now in Michigan!

I just can't get over how beautiful your yard is. Sorry for all the rain but I am sure everything is extra green because of it.

What a happy story for your maple! They are my favorite tree, well... along with the magnolia, dogwood, etc.

We're rather warm and humid today, but your cold front swings down tomorrow, I do believe...

What a great story about the maple tree!(Glad the lightning didn't hit your house.) I love stories like that. I found your warm weather; it's here! You've got my rain, although I'm more than happy for you (or anyone else on the planet) to keep it! :-) Everything in your photo looks nice and green and hydrated. FYI: Not one of my carrots sprouted this year! Not ONE! Ugh! I'm going to get new seed and try again next week. My beans, peas, radishes, and beets just broke through the soil yesterday, so your garden is behind at all. Thanks for the Miracle Grow tip; I've heard good things about it. Hope Thor had fun at the Puppy Ball! I love that photo merging Thor and Bear! :-) Oh, one more thing - we finished Calvert yesterday! We'll be putting away all the books and stuff today! Yippee! I really liked the 7th grade curriculum. Good stuff. Now I just want the girls to hurry up and be done!

Oh man, I meant to say that your garden is NOT behind at all. I desperately need an edit key! :-)

The global warming is all down here. Luckily, the Puppy Ball has air conditioning.

I hope Thor has a good time!!! :)

I can't believe how green everything is!
We're in winter here and it isn't that green here yet! Well, except for the weeds.

I'm glad that maple made it though, because it would have heartbreaking otherwise...

A bear?!!! A mama bear with cubs can be a hazardous situation! I hope they find their way back to where they came from. Hope they aren't in the mood for some of your lettuce! Now that I think of it, they probably found out about all the desserts to be had at your house from cake to ice cream! And since it's Tuesday, that means Brownies! Seriously though, no early morning or dusk walks until mama bear and cubbies are far away.

The rain is good, though! I had been griping about our rain--then we went out of town, it didn't rain, and my parsley pretty much bit the dust :/

Garden is look fantastic!

Maybe all this cold weather means that you'll have an even longer growing season this summer!

Stay away from bears.
