Garden Tuesday: Grape Vines

Do you believe that in mid May I cut this back to no more than 8" off the fence in any direction? I wanted to save my lilac and dogwood trees from being eaten by the grape vines.

So, instead it's eating my Suburban.
Seriously. It's latched onto the back door hinges. Time to get out the cutters again.

On the plus side, looks like the boys will have plenty of grapes in September!

We also have a grape vine that has a mind of it's own, unfortunately with a late freeze in May it doesn't look like we will be having any grapes to enjoy this fall.

That's an opportunistic vine. I have lots of leaves and very few grapes. Guess I'll have to make dolmas.

we have vines but no grapes yet. Get the boys working on geometry and wordworking and have them build an arbor so that vine will leave your suburban alone. g

I only planted our first vine this year so we have a long way to go:) I have been watching all the vineyards around us though and they seem to be doing well. I have to say yours has very vigorous growth. Diane

Wow, that's one determined vine. It's getting revenge for you cutting it back. Do you make wine?

I always wanted a grape vine.

Grapes actually grow here, as well. I will do that...next year.

No grapes or vines in the woods, but vineyards abound around here. Vines by nature are pushy, aren't they?

I'm guessing the Suburban doesn't go for a ride very often, eh? lol

That's amazing, Marjie. Are you certain it's not a man-eating grape vine?
:) I'd keep the kids away.

My neighbors got a grapevine that prefers to live on my side of the fence, so the beauty is, we eat til we drop... and then when it gets on my nerves I just whack it back.
We had so many grapes this year, that I thought I had died and gone to heaven!!
