Garden Tuesday: Days Gone By

My grandmother was absurdly talented. She could cook like nobody's business. She was a fabulous tailor/seamstress. And she was quite an artist - she could draw, paint and sculpt.

And she was one helluva gardener.

This was in back of her house, which was a tiny 4 room cottage. She'd had the back yard excavated, and a French Door put through the basement wall. Because there were slopes up either side of the back yard, lined with rocks, she filled in with soil, then planted flowers and "stuff" to make it pretty. Like I said, she could garden.

All these flowers make me long for spring. Soon, soon.

What a pretty dress she was wearing, I bet she made it. The flowers are beautiful. I too am dreaming of summer. It hailed here last night - I am totally over winter.

What a wonderful story and memory...it's almost Spring but having said that...it snowed here this morning and then the sun came out...Oregon is weird like that.

Wow, what a great garden. I'll imagine sitting there sipping a cool drink while the temps plummet and the rain falls here.

What a great picure of your grandmother!! This post makes me so happy and nostalgic.

My grandmother was amazing in the garden, too. As a WWII nurse, she came back to the Dakotas but didn't have children until she was near and in her 40's. She maintained a gigantic vegetable garden for as long as my mom can remember, and I have fond memories of picking lettuce and pulling radishes :)

She made everyone's clothes and even taught me to sew a bit, too. I wish I'd gotten to the zipper lesson :)

What wonderful women we have had in our lives.
